What Are AmberPax™ Collections?

Simply put, AmberPax™ Collections are groups of five stories centered around a specific theme. Each story within an AmberPax™ is released individually, on the same day as the others, and can be purchased separately, but these five stories can also be purchased as a single unit (the full AmberPax™) at a discount, currently 25%. Generally, an AmberPax™ is similar to an "anthology" of stories, but instead of the titles being released in only a single volume (file), they are also available individually. These AmberPax™ Collections are sold exclusively through our website and only in electronic format.

THIS BLOG is for news about the Pax Collections - follow it to keep up with releases, find early news of the upcoming collections, and share Pax fun and chat with the authors!

Goodbye Town by T.A. Chase

Hello everyone! I’m T.A. Chase and I’m here to chat about my new book, Goodbye Town. It’s part of To Love a Hero PAX at Amber Allure.

This one features Duke and Evan, who were boyfriends while in high school. Of course, they never told anyone since they lived in a very small town. Neither set of parents were there for the boys, so they became each other’s family. Then Evan left after graduation and Duke was stuck in this place that he hated.

Goodbye Town is a reunited lovers story. There’s not a lot of angst in it. Simply two men finding each other again and trying to see if what they used to have was still there.  I like the idea of old lovers getting a second chance, but only if they broke up because of circumstances, not a misunderstanding. I’ll freely admit I don’t like misunderstandings as story plots. People should just talk to each other…lol

If any of you are country music fans, you might recognize the title. Lady Antebellum sang a song called “Goodbye Town” and that’s where I got my inspiration from, though I allowed my guys to meet up later in their lives when they are both ready for more than what they have at the moment.

My friend, Devon Rhodes, often jokes about the fact that I get a lot of titles and story ideas from songs. It’s true. I think a majority of my titles come from songs or poems. Sometimes, there’s a line—or lyric—that hits me and an idea springs from there. Which is why I listen to music a lot…driving, running or just writing….there’s always music playing.

I hope you get a chance to check out Goodbye Town and see if Duke and Evan get their own happy ever after. Thanks for stopping by and letting me ramble. Lol

Goodbye Town by T.A. Chase

Duke Smith is ready to leave Granter’s Corner, the little backwater town in which he’d lived for twenty-eight years. Since his mother has recently died and his father’s in prison, there’s no need for him to stick around. His only good memories of the place are those moments spent with Evan Harper, his boyhood friend and first love. Evan left when they were eighteen, and while Duke never resented him for it, he has missed him.

Evan Harper is on his way to San Diego where his SEAL team has been stationed, but he has to make one stop along the way. He’s missed only one thing from his life in Granter’s Corner, and that’s Duke Smith. When they reconnect, Evan is thrilled to know their feelings haven’t changed during the years they were apart.

Duke already has plans to relocate to the coast, and moving in with Evan is a golden opportunity he can’t resist. Could fate be finally giving them a chance now that both of them have said goodbye to the past?

...The silence between them was comfortable, as though there hadn’t been a time when they hadn’t been together like this. The whistle of the night train grew louder, prompting Duke to put down his food and grab a beer before moving to where he could see the tracks.

Evan stood and walked over to join Duke, leaning against him hard enough that Duke lifted his arm to lay it over Evan’s shoulder. It’s like we haven’t been apart. They had some talking to do, but not tonight and not here. They’d never talked when they came to the clearing. Watching the night train go by had been the excuse they used if they were ever caught together, but really they’d come there for more intimate things.

He tapped his bottle against Evan’s, then took a sip. Evan glanced at the bottle.

“I never thought I’d see you drinking anything other than PBR,” Evan teased.

“We drank what we could sneak out with, and that was what my momma liked to drink. It wasn’t a beer I liked.” He took a deep breath, then admitted, “I only liked it when I could taste it on your lips.”
Evan stiffened for a second, then relaxed. “Yeah. It was the same with me. I drink Corona now, or whatever shit my teammates buy. Discovered I can’t stand the taste of PBR.”

Duke smiled. “I wonder if it would be different if we were drinking it together.”

“Maybe we can test that theory sometime soon.”

He didn’t protest when Evan took his beer from him and set it and his on the ground at the edge of the blanket. Looking down into Evan’s eyes, he remembered all the times they’d stood like this. He’d always been taller than Evan, but he’d never thought of Evan as smaller or weaker than him. Hell, even back before Evan enlisted, he could’ve kicked Duke’s ass, and had, a couple of times when they’d gotten mad at each other. His eyes drifted closed when Evan cradled his face in his rough hands.

“I’ve been thinking about this for a long time, Duke. Hoping and praying I’d get another chance to kiss you.” Evan’s breath whispered over Duke’s lips as he encouraged Duke to bend.

Duke wasn’t inclined to fight since he felt the same way. Their mouths touched, and it seemed like they hadn’t parted ways all those years ago. As he took it deeper, sweeping his tongue in to taste the beer and horseradish, Duke felt the subtle changes. Evan wasn’t as hesitant about where to put his hands or how much power to use when he crushed Duke against him. He gripped Duke’s ass, dragging his groin over Duke’s erection.

“Oh God, Evan,” Duke moaned, letting his head drop to the side and offering up more of his skin for Evan to kiss. “It’s been too long.”

He felt Evan freeze, then ease back a few inches. Opening his eyes, he found Evan staring at him with concern shining in his eyes.

“How long?”

Duke laughed when he realized what Evan was thinking. He patted Evan’s chest. “Don’t worry. I’ve had sex since you left. Hell, the last time was three days ago. I just meant it’s been too long for you and me.”

“Oh.” Evan looked relieved, then his eyes narrowed. “Who was the guy?”

“No. You don’t need to know that. First of all, it really isn’t any of your business, and second of all, he’s not out. He’s not married or dating anyone either, which is why I had sex with him. If he’d been either of those two, it wouldn’t have happened. I won’t let anyone cheat with me.” Duke steadily met Evan’s intense gaze.

“How do you know I don’t have someone waiting for me? I mean I could just be passing through and wanting to get my rocks off with an old friend before I continue on.” Evan leered.

He laughed. “You’re made just like me, Evan. Built loyal. You wouldn’t screw around on anyone, not even with me. You do notice I didn’t ask?”

Nodding, Evan stepped back without saying anything else. He lightly bit Duke’s chin, then returned to trailing kisses along Duke’s throat...

An Excerpt from Scarecrows and Devils by T.A. Chase

Hello everyone. I’m here to give you an excerpt from my newest release, Scarecrows and Devils. ☺ I loved writing about Detective Ace Castle and Dulles, the fallen angel who might become more than a friend. I hope you enjoy the sneak peek and go to check it out. ☺

Excerpt-

I'm Detective Ace Castle and I call the streets of Detroit home.

She's a faded queen, my city. Once she wore the gaudiest jewels and the most expensive designs. Now it's as though those outer trappings of success and prosperity hang tattered around her. Her crown is tarnished and her reign weak.

My city struggles to survive. Every hour, she loses more of her spirit. Yet there are people who still believe in Detroit, who love this deposed ruler with all their hearts, and I am one.

The day I took my oath to "serve and protect" the citizens of Detroit, I did so knowing how dangerous this job I chose could be. I will admit I never understood how dangerous until I stood face-to-face with a true monster and it was kill or be killed.

You readers may think it strange that I never knew about the "things that go bump in the night." I thought what I heard were fairytales and legends. Stories to scare children into being good. I should've realized that there's a little bit of truth in every story, even the most outlandish tales.

"What are you always writing in that notebook of yours, Castle?"

I shut the book before turning to meet the curious gaze of my newest partner. At thirty-eight, I should've either been promoted to lieutenant or retired, but here I sit, the senior detective on the squad and the one who always got the rookies.

"Beamer," I say, then cough. My pack-a-day habit plays havoc with my voice. "What was the first thing I told you when we met?"

The kid squints as he tries to remember. "No asking stupid questions."

"Right, and that was a stupid question. If I wanted you to know what I was writing, I'd have let you read it."

"Castle, you caught a floater in the river down by the Joe," the desk sergeant yells from across the room.

Sighing, I stand and tuck my notebook away. "Come on, kid."

He wrinkles his nose. "I hate floaters," he mutters as he tugs on his jacket before catching the keys I toss him.

I do, too, but I'm not about to tell him. He needs to see me as invincible, cynical or immune to all the shit our crappy world throws at us. I get the exact location, and we head out.

"The Joe" is Joe Louis Arena, home to one of hockey's most storied franchises--the Detroit Red Wings. Those ice warriors have been giving the people of this city hope for eighty-nine years, and even when the team sucked, the fans still cheered them on.

This isn't our part of town. Beamer and I tend to keep track of the dead over on the South side, so there's only one reason we were called out on this one. The floater's not human--or has been killed by some non-human.

While I'm a senior detective in the DPD, my unit isn't the one getting commendations and medals. To be honest, we're usually shuffled to the basement of police headquarters and forgotten until something weird happens, then we're called out. I still haven't figured out what Beamer did to get sent to my unit. He's not saying, which is a question I ask him often enough when I want him to stop talking.

We work other cases. Hell, with the rate of homicides rising in the city, the police use every possible officer they can. But when it's weird or unusual, I get dragged out to investigate. All because my first case at the police department involved a man murdered by a demon. There's no going back to a normal life after you've seen a man torn apart with nothing left to identify him except for one finger to get a print from.

The other guys jokingly call my specialty the 77th precinct. I usually ignore them, but sometimes I tell them to fuck off. It's hard making a joke about my job after seeing what I've seen.

As we arrive at the crime scene, I climb out of our sedan and glance around. Sometimes the killer hangs around when the police show up. They get a kick out of seeing us chase our tails. I bump Beamer's shoulder as we meet at the front of the car.

"Have one of the crime techs take pictures of the crowd," I tell him.

"Yes, sir."

I roll my eyes, hating his rather patronizing tone. "When you're done, come find me."

Ignoring anything else he might have to say, I jerk the collar of my trench up around my neck. It's cold here as winter begins to take hold in the city. The destruction and desolate feel makes it feel chillier than it should. Urban decay is slowly taking over this once beautiful city, breaking my heart a little at a time.

I study the graffiti decorating the support beams for the overpass, deciphering which gang owns the section of the city where the body has been found. I would have to go question them. Wincing, I shake my head. Dragons. Hamilton Lee's gang and one of the most vicious in all of Detroit. He's human, but I wouldn't doubt he has a paranormal or two hiding out within his ranks.

We grew up together, and I turn a blind eye to what he's done. He's killed men, and I know that, but there's no proof, and I won't risk my career to go after him. Not when he has the police commissioner and some very important people in the mayor's office on his payroll.

I'd take Beamer with me when I go to chat with him. My partner needs to know who the players are in town, not that I expect him to have to make deals with any of them.

"Hey there, Castle. Got another weird one for you," one of the uniforms calls to me as I approach where a few of them are milling about.

There's a lump close to the edge of the riverbank. At least someone had the decency to cover up the dead. That's not always the case, especially if it's paranormal in nature. The humans in the area tend not to see them as creatures to respect.

I think if they were to ever see a werewolf in full moon madness or a demon in the grip of their vocation, they would fear them, which could lead to respecting them. Or at least worrying that if they didn't, the being would kill them.

I have no such concern. I treat every creature I run across the same. Total indifference. I don't care whether they are human or paranormal. Whether they're a wolf, a demon or a dragon. They have as much right to live in my city as I do, but if they cause trouble for this place that I love, then they will be treated to my complete focus and a lot of people don't like when I pay attention to them.

"Tell us what you have so far," I order as I get closer.

Most of my fellow officers in the DPD have no real love for me. Nor I for them. Yet where I differ from them--I would back them in any situation. If one of them needs me, I will be there. I'm pretty sure none of them have the same thought about me.

The senior officer, O'Grady, glares at me for a minute, but I don't blink. He knows I won't budge until he tells me everything, and if I don't move, he's stuck at the scene until I let him go.

O'Grady huffs, then says, "A homeless woman swears she saw a guy dressed in a yellow suit dump the body at around three o'clock this morning. Then apparently he disappeared."

The younger uniform snickers. "Crazy broad is probably doing coke or meth. The homelessness is getting out of control around here. We need to round them up and ship them somewhere else."

I strike as fast as a rattler, twisting my hand into the front of his starched uniform and yanking him off his feet. Glancing down to read his nametag, I snarl, "Samuelson, get your ass out of here, and I never want to see you working another one of my crime scenes. You entitled little fucker. It's only by the grace of whatever higher being you believe in, that you have a job and aren't on the streets like the rest of these unfortunates."

O'Grady grabs my arm in an attempt to get me to let go. I shake Samuelson once before shoving him away from me. "Both of you get your ungrateful asses out of here. Beamer and I can handle this."

"Gladly. You're a fucking loose cannon, Castle. One of these days, there won't be anyone around to save your ass," O'Grady warns before dragging Samuelson back toward their patrol car.

"Another shining example of how to win friends and influence people, I see," Beamer comments, as he joins me.

"Fuck off, Beamer," I mutter, about to crouch down to uncover the body.

He touches my arm, then lets his hand drop. "Why do you act that way? He was only saying what most people think."

I surge to my feet before strolling over to the edge of the river. I stare across it at the Canadian coastline, yet I'm not seeing it. I'm seeing my mother sleeping in an alley, wearing dirty ragged clothes. Her hair's stringy and unwashed. She smells like garbage. There's nothing I can do to convince her to come home with me. She's lost in her own world, and while it's not the world I want for her, it's one that makes her happy.

"He's never known what it's like to suffer a loss so big it breaks you," I mumble, not caring if Beamer can hear me or not. "Both of them have always lived in a middle-class neighborhood with working parents who can hold a job and love their kids. They don't know what it's like to see your father drink himself to death, then watch your mom go off the deep end."

"Castle," Beamer says.

I dip my shoulder, avoiding his touch. I hate thinking about her and my old life. I dragged myself out the gutter to try to be a better person than I used to be. It didn't always work, and if I'm not careful, I'll be following my father into that early grave, soused with alcohol and cigarettes.

Scarecrows and Devils by T.A. Chase

Ace Castle, detective in the Detroit Homicide Unit, works in the paranormal division known as the 77th Precinct. He and his partner deal with the weird, odd, and downright strange cases popping up in the city. Ace has been doing the unusual work since he started at the DPD, and since then, he has learned that the monsters children swear are under their beds just might really be there.

Now, when a girl is murdered in the city, it’s up to Ace and his partner to find the killer along with his motive for ending her life. Yet Ace soon discovers the victim was no ordinary human, but an Undine, and he’s pretty sure her killer is also one of those aforementioned monsters.

Finding a murderer is hard enough without constant interference from demon lords and fallen angels, so when Dulles, a fallen angel Ace has known for years, is determined to make Ace fall in love with him, his job soon becomes twice as difficult...

Read a short excerpt...

...As a coroner’s van pulls up to the scene, I separate myself from a group of shopkeepers I’d been interviewing. While I could’ve sent Beamer to talk to Dulles, I want the privilege of standing next to him. Pathetic for a man of my age to act like a star-struck teenager, but I can’t help the way he makes me feel.

I arrive at the van just as he steps from it. Every inch of my body takes notice and I silently swear at myself. Dulles is perfection in human form—or as human a form as a fallen angel can take. Yep. The coroner who works on the paranormal homicide cases is a fallen angel. Not something you would think—or hear—every day.

Yet it works because Dulles is able to think beyond the normal realm of human capabilities to discover if the killer was human or paranormal. Plus his being an angel—fallen or otherwise—puts him at the top of paranormal society. So while he can help me when I need to go talk to beings that look down on humans, it also puts him far beyond what I can hope to achieve.

His dark blue eyes meet mine and he smiles. The scar burnt into his cheek pulls the corner of his right lip, so it looks more like a sneer than a grin, but I know he’s happy to see me. I’ve never figured out why he enjoys my company.

“Sorry to pull you away from whatever you were doing,” I say as he approaches me.

“While I wish we could meet under better circumstances, Ace, I don’t mind coming out when you’re the one calling.” Dulles takes my hand in his and squeezes.

My cheeks heat, causing me to duck my head. I don’t yank away from his touch because it’s been a while since I’ve felt another person’s touch, and just the brush of Dulles’s skin on mine shoots fireworks along my nerve endings.

“I still appreciate you doing this.”

Because let’s be honest, as a fallen, he can do pretty much whatever he wants. It’s not like he needs to work for a living. I step back to let him get to the back of his van. He already has on the black coveralls he likes to wear at crime scenes. I don’t like them because they hide his ass, which is truly a work of art.

Like that statue in Rome—the one they call David that’s supposed to be the representation of the perfect male form. I’ve never laid eyes on that piece of marble, but I have laid eyes on Dulles and I think he might have modeled for the artist. Unfortunately, I’ve never seen him naked, so I can’t be a hundred percent sure.

“Castle? Are you here?”

Blinking, I turn to look at Beamer, who stands next to me. “What?”

“Do I take the doctor to where the body is or are you going to do it?” Beamer smirks, and I glare at him. As he clears his throat, he steps back from me. “I’ll keep canvassing the area.”

“Call O’Grady. See if the bastard will tell you the name of the homeless lady who saw the guy in yellow dump the girl,” I tell him. “Then see if you can find her. When you do, ask her to come back here. Tell her Ace would like to talk to her.”

“Why do you think that’ll make her come with me? Most of the homeless around here want nothing to do with the police.”

Beamer’s right. It’s an unfortunate side effect of the economic downturn hitting this city. Though not all those who live on the streets are there because they’re poor. Some are addicts. Some have mental problems they’re unable to handle or control. Some have lost everything and the anonymity of the streets makes them feel safest. Whatever their reason, they have no love or trust for the police who will force them back into a world they can’t be a part of any more.

“Of course she’ll come with you. Just tell her Ace wishes to speak to her. The homeless know him and they trust him.” Dulles comes to stand next to me. He rests his hand on my shoulder while talking to Beamer.

I can’t risk looking at him because I’m afraid of what my expression will show. Dulles has been around during some of my less-than-stellar moments when the whiskey overcame my mouth. He’s the holder of my secrets. I thank God in the dark of night that I didn’t spill my guts about my attraction to him. Pitying me because of my family and where I came from is one thing. Feeling sorry for me because I’m longing for something outside my sphere of reality is something else entirely...

Trailing Air by T.A. Chase

Hey everyone. Thanks for stopping by the Amber Allure Pax Blog. My story for the Kiss of Fire PAX that came out this past weekend is Trailing Air.

Trailing Air is book Four in the Preternatural series and is Rover’s story. We find out if all of our heroes manage to save themselves and the world, or will it all go to hell in a hand basket?

Also, Rover needs a happy ever after and I hope you fall in love with his hero. Elwin Ice Cloud is a dragon that has to make some choices to save someone important to him. Yet he’s not willing to destroy the world to do it, so he has to figure out how to do both without anyone dying.

When I started the Preternatural series, I didn’t have an plan that there were going to be any more stories after Allergies, but I introduced an amazing family of wolf shifters. As I wrote them, I realized there were more characters we needed to meet and new places for us to go and visit. So I decided to write Nick of Time and Love’s Baggage. Then everyone decided Rover needed his story told next.

I know this story has been a long time coming and I’m sorry about that. But I hope it’s worth the wait. Please enjoy it. Thanks for stopping by and chatting for a little bit about Rover’s story.

Trailing Air by T.A. Chase

(Part of the The Preternaturals series)

What are the Preternaturals supposed to do when the book holding the destruction of their kind within its pages is stolen from them? Not panic and hope that the situation changes before the humans get their own hands on it.

The werewolf Rover Canis can’t believe he’s escorting the very creature that stole the book holding spells that could kill every Preternatural in the world. Yet here he is doing so, and admiring his extremely attractive companion probably isn’t the smartest thing he’s ever done either. But if he is to save himself along with all his kind, Rover needs to keep his mind on the mission.

Elwin Ice Cloud, a shapeshifting dragon, swipes the powerful book in order to save his kidnapped sister, but he never plans on handing it over to the humans. Yet when dangers grow too difficult for him to handle on his own, he returns to the lycan on whom he’d been spying. Meeting the sexy Rover gives him something else to think about, yet falling in love isn’t in his plans either.

Together, these two very different shapeshifters must find a way to trust each other in order to save all the Preternaturals from certain death. If they somehow manage to do so, will love be their ultimate reward?

Read a short excerpt...

...His brother stopped and stared at him. “You aren’t protecting him, are you? He’s the one who stole the book and attacked Marvus. Only the gods know where Pavel is.”

“I have an idea where he might be,” Elwin spoke up.

Rover glanced behind him. “I suggest you keep your mouth shut at the moment. I’ll protect you because my mother and the others will want to talk to you, but I’m not any happier about your presence than Bandit is.”

Opening and closing his mouth, Elwin nodded, brushing his hair over his shoulder and out of the way. Rover’s gaze followed the flow of that light blue glittering mass. He clenched his hand and let it drop, instead of touching Elwin’s hair.

“Come join us at the bar. Rover, maybe our guest would like a drink.” Serpens’s suggestion wasn’t really one. It was definitely a command.

Rover whirled around and glared at the cobra, but even his meanest look didn’t faze the spirit guide. Nick gestured to the stool next to him.

“Please come and sit with us. I’m not sure why you’d chose to walk into the Wolf Pack, knowing how they feel about you, but you must have your reasons.”

“How we feel about him? What about you? Grime has your best friend, Nick, and we don’t know if he’s okay.” Bandit snarled, claws breaking through his skin.

“Get a hold of yourself,” Rover ordered. Most of his patrons were wolves, but some weren’t, and those had no idea wolf shifters existed.

Bandit lunged for Elwin, and Rover grabbed him by the throat, swung him around, and slammed Bandit against the wall. Silence reigned in the bar. It wasn’t the first time Rover had disciplined Bandit, but it was the first time Rover wanted to rip his brother apart.

“Go and get the rest of the pack. Mother needs to talk to Elwin. Don’t force me to prove I’m stronger than you.” Rover crowded Bandit’s personal space.

“Rover, let him go. It’s okay.” Elwin laid his hand on Rover’s arm.

Rover’s fury eased and he dropped Bandit back to the ground. “Go now.”

Bandit stalked out and slammed the back door behind him, emphasizing his disdain of Rover and the others. Rover met Elwin’s bright blue gaze, and the thought hit him that the dragon’s eyes matched his hair. Shaking his head, he eased that stupid image. It didn’t matter, because once Elwin told them where to find the book, Rover would throw him out on his ass.

“All right, everyone, bar’s closed for the night.” Rover motioned for his patrons to leave. “Pay your tabs and get the hell out.”

After the mass exodus, Rover rejoined them at the end of the bar.

“Why have you been watching my family?”

Rover returned to behind the bar, picked up a towel, and started cleaning a glass. Ray, Nick, and Elwin settled on stools, facing him. Elwin sat between the other two, and Rover’s mind skittered around, thinking how pretty all three of those men were. Shit. He needed to get his head out of his pants or things would get out of hand.

“What can I get you to drink?”

Elwin studied him with those brilliant eyes and pursed his lips. “It’s been a long time since I’ve had anything to drink in the human world. I believe I’ll simply have some water, please.”

Rover tried to ignore how much he wanted to press his lips against Elwin’s mouth. This stranger had stolen the one thing that could save all the preters. Rover shouldn’t be feeling any sort of good feelings toward him.

Yet there was a small voice in the back of his head that said maybe he should give Elwin the benefit of the doubt. There had to be a reason why the dragon had done what he did. Rover snorted as he filled a glass of water for Elwin. Don’t let your dick try to convince you the dragon did nothing wrong. He stole from you...

Deserves to be Adored by T.A. Chase

Hello everyone. T.A. Chase here and I’d like to chat for a moment about my newest release, Deserves to be Adored. Obviously, it’s part of the Something’s Coming PAX, which deals with fortunes/tarot cards.

Raleigh is an older guy, who works as an escort for the Santiago crime family. He’s done it since he was eighteen and really doesn’t have an issue with what he’s doing. The Santiagos take good care of him and the other escorts. He paid his own way through college by doing it and is proud of what he’s accomplished.

Joey is younger and drives the escorts to and from their clients. He’s the youngest son of the head of the crime family. He’s never thought less of the women and men who work for his family. Heck his mother would slap him upside the head if he disrespected any of them.

Raleigh and Joey never really had a lot to do with each other, then one day someone from Raleigh’s past shows up. Things start happening and that’s where Deserves begins.

I hope if you get a chance to read it, you think it’s a little different take on the whole ‘rent boy’ story. Raleigh might not have had a choice when he started, but he stayed doing it because he liked the money and it helped give him some independence. I’m sure my crime family might be a little idealized and unusual, but that’s how they came to me. They didn’t seem the ‘normal’ mob family.

Thanks for stopping by and checking Deserves to be Adored out. Have a great day.

Deserves to Be Adored by T.A. Chase

Joey Santiago works for his uncle, the de facto leader of the Santiago crime family. His usual job is to drive escorts to and from their appointments with high-paying clients. He likes his duties well enough and doesn’t judge the escorts for making money off sex. So when his uncle asks him to check on the welfare of Raleigh Patterson, one of the male escorts, Joey does as he’s ordered without question, especially since he’s grown fond of the attractive man.

Raleigh has been an escort for the Santiagos since he turned eighteen. They treat him well and he’s even been able to put himself through college with the money he earns. But now that he’s in his thirties, he worries that getting older will soon hurt his livelihood since many clients prefer young twinks. Plus, he’s having difficulties with his homophobic family insisting he return home to Louisiana and take his place as the head of his mother’s coven. When Raleigh refuses their demand, they resort to violence, kidnapping, and witchcraft to force him to change his mind.

When Joey discovers that Raleigh has been beaten, he can’t stop himself from getting involved in the man’s troubles. Even as the attraction between them grows, Raleigh and Joey must figure out a way to save Raleigh from the ruthless plots of the coven. And if they don’t find a solution soon, Raleigh could lose everything he’s come to cherish...including Joey.

Read a short excerpt...

...Joey headed toward Raleigh’s apartment, hoping nothing bad had happened to the guy. Joey liked Raleigh, though he didn’t see him often. Raleigh was one of the older escorts, and he had his own designated driver when he went out. He also had a set list of clients and rarely took new ones. The Santiagos charged a lot of money for a night with Raleigh. From what Joey heard, he was worth it.

The women and men who worked for the Santiagos were treated well. They actually got to keep a good portion of their earnings. Mostly because Lorna believed that people who were good at their jobs should be paid what they’re worth. Even if they’re whores and rent boys. It kept them happy, and happy workers meant less hassle for the family.

After leaving the car in the parking complex a block from Raleigh’s building, Joey strolled up the steps to the intercom, then pushed the button for Raleigh’s apartment.

A few minutes later, Raleigh said, “Hello?”

He smiled at the faint accent in the man’s voice. Raleigh had moved up north when he was sixteen, but he still had a slight Southern drawl.

“Hey, Raleigh, it’s Joey Santiago. Uncle Frank sent me over to check and make sure you’re okay.”

“I’m fine, Joey. You tell Frank I’ll call him tomorrow.”

Joey’s gut didn’t like how Raleigh rushed out those reassurances. “Ah, you know it doesn’t work that way. He’ll just keep sending me back here until I lay eyes on you. So you might as well let me in this time.”

Raleigh’s tired sigh came over the intercom, and Joey wanted to wrap the man up in a tight hug. Which was weird because Joey only tended to hug the girls and would never presume to touch Raleigh in that way. Not because he was a guy or anything like that.

Hell, Joey’d fucked a couple guys when he wanted to get his rocks off and there weren’t any girls around. He’d never thought about whether he was straight, bi, or gay. Sex was sex, no matter who he did it with.

No, that wasn’t why he’d never thought about touching Raleigh. There was something elegant and regal in the way Raleigh carried himself. A way that said he might sell his body for money, but he’d never sold his soul. His self-worth wasn’t tied up in what he did for a living, though Joey wouldn’t be shocked if Raleigh wasn’t damn proud of how he’d paid his way through college and could support himself rather well with this job.

Raleigh never seemed ashamed of who he was and what he did. It was that self-acceptance and confidence that both scared and attracted Joey, and caused him to treat Raleigh differently from the others.

“All right, Joey. I’ll let you in.”

The buzzer sounded, unlocking the door. After Joey entered the foyer, he waited until the door shut and relocked, not wanting someone who didn’t belong there to slip in behind him. He’d seen enough movies and TV shows to know that was one way bad guys got into places they shouldn’t.

Once the entrance was secure, he wandered to the elevators, then punched in Raleigh’s floor. While riding up, he pulled out his phone and sent a text to Candice about getting Rocky to come pick her up when she was done. She was a good girl and wouldn’t complain since Rocky was a cool guy.

Uncle Frank had to be careful about hiring guys to drive around the escorts. A lot of the drivers seemed to have the idea their job meant they could get free pussy. Joey and Rocky talked to each new hire, letting him know the escorts were off limits, unless the girls—or guys—themselves said it was okay.

He knocked on Raleigh’s door and waited.

“Is that you, Joey?” Raleigh called through the wood.

“Yeah, Raleigh. It’s me.”

His smile disappeared when Raleigh opened the door, revealing a split lip and black eye...

Another Excerpt of From the Rubble by T.A. Chase

Hey everyone. This is T.A. Chase and my newest book, From the Rubble, is part of the Heavy Petting 2 PAX that came out on Sunday. I thought I’d share the blurb and a small excerpt from it. I hope you get a chance to check it out.

Ever since watching a search and rescue team find his lost sister, Keaton Goodwin has worked and trained to become a SAR handler. He raises the perfect dogs to work with him, and he loves his job. When he’s called to take his dog, Kaiser, to Bogata, Colombia after a devastating earthquake, Keaton heads out not sure what he’ll find.

And what he doesn’t expect to find is Master Sergeant Nodin Standing Bear.

Nodin’s squad has been sent by the Army to help keep the SAR teams safe during the search and rescue part of the operation. He’s done a lot of this kind of work during his twenty-three years of service, yet there’s something different about Keaton, and Nodin knows a disaster area isn’t the best place to start a relationship.

When Keaton disappears, Nodin has to face how much he really cares about the younger man. Will the emotions they feel amongst the rubble be enough of a foundation to build a future?

Excerpt

An insistent ringing broke through Keaton’s dream and he groaned as he rolled over, not even opening his eyes as he grabbed his phone off the nightstand.

“Goodwin,” he growled into the phone.

“I need you and Kaiser at the airport ASAP. There was an earthquake in Colombia and they need search and rescue there to look for survivors.” His boss, Connor St. Lawrence, ordered him.

“Yes, sir. We’ll be there in thirty minutes.”

After hanging up, Keaton tossed his phone on the bed then jumped out from under the covers. Kaiser sat in the doorway, staring at him expectantly.

“Yes, we’re going. I have to get dressed. Go get your leash.”

Kaiser barked once before dashing from the room. Keaton smiled at how eager his companion was. They hadn’t gone on a mission for several months and they were both getting a little antsy. He tugged on his jeans and a long sleeve T-shirt before putting on socks.

As he stalked from his bedroom, he scooped up his phone. He sent a quick text to his sister, Grace, to let her know what was going on and have her come feed the rest of his animals while he was gone.

Downstairs, Kaiser sat next to the door, leash in his mouth. Keaton chuckled as he took Kaiser’s harness down from where he hung it after their last training session. He stuffed it into the backpack he’d taken from the front hallway closet. The backpack held two dog dishes, treats, and toys Kaiser loved playing with. After grabbing his to-go duffle that held several changes of clothes, his passport, Kaiser’s health records and toothbrushes. Everything he would need for an extended stay. The search and rescue group Keaton worked with would provide food and water for them.

He took the leash from Kaiser, but didn’t worry about hooking it to Kaiser’s collar. He’d stay with Keaton until ordered otherwise. They went outside to the truck and Keaton motioned for Kaiser to jump in the back. The dog settled on the seat, his bright gold eyes studying Keaton, trying to figure out what was going on by the small changes in Keaton’s expression or voice.

“Don’t worry, boy. It’s not time yet.” He patted Kaiser on the head before tossing their bags onto the floor.

After he slid behind the steering wheel, he started the engine then backed it out of the driveway. His phone rang as he turned in the direction of the airport.

Read a short excerpt...

...“Master Sergeant Standing Bear.”

“Yes, sir.” Nodin saluted as his platoon commander approached him.

“We’ll be going wheels up in ten to fly to Colombia. Get your men on the plane and secure.” Adamson looked grim, and Nodin knew that whatever had happened in Colombia was serious. “I’ll brief everyone once we’re in the air.”

“Yes, sir.”

Nodin waited until Adamson had moved on before addressing his squad. “Let’s get on the plane and secure our packs.”

“Do you know what’s going on, Sarge?” Hernandez asked.

He shook his head. “No, I don’t. We’ll find out once we’re airborne.”

His men knew better than to ask him again, so they grabbed their rucks and climbed aboard the plane. They all settled in their spots after securing their packs for the flight. Nodin watched as the other squads came aboard and took their places. Once everyone was settled, Adamson gestured for all the NCOs to come forward to where he stood.

“Bogota has been devastated by a seven-point-eight earthquake an hour ago. The US is sending several units to help support the Colombian military. Our job will be to safeguard the SAR teams flying in to search the rubble for survivors. We all know how dangerous this can be. Not only are the cartels going to try shit, but once we get beyond a certain point in time, the civilians will become desperate as well.” Adamson grimaced. “We have to make sure the people and their dogs aren’t kidnapped or killed. We’re to keep them safe.”

Nodin nodded. His squad had done this kind of protection detail before in other emergencies around the world, but he had to admit this might be one of the most dangerous ones. The cartels weren’t frightened of the military, and their presence wouldn’t mean as much in Colombia as it did elsewhere in the world. Yet he and his men would do their best to keep the SAR teams safe.

“Once we land and get oriented, we’ll go to the temporary base. After all the SAR teams arrive, I’ll talk with their boss to work out the teams and grid searches,” Adamson informed them. “Now get buckled in and we’ll take off. This is going to be a hard mission, men, and we have to make sure everyone gets home alive and unhurt.”

“Yes, sir,” they said, before rejoining their squads.

After taking his seat, Nodin got situated, then touched the bear claw that hung around his neck. He said a silent prayer to the Higher Being he believed in to keep everyone—the victims and the rescue workers—safe in the weeks to come.

There would be aftershocks for months after the main event, and he only hoped they wouldn’t be big ones. Those could cause as much damage as the original quake did, and he knew there would be a lot of unstable buildings needing to be shored up or demolished, depending on the amount of damage done.

His phone vibrated, causing him to pull it out to check it. He smiled when he saw it was a text from his sister. He slid his finger across the screen before typing in his password to unlock it. Scrolling through the texts he’d gotten, he found the new one from his sister.

Will take Harper home with me. Be safe and call if/when you can.

Relaxing slightly at the knowledge his cat would be taken care of, Nodin sent a quick thank you back to her before turning his phone off. There wasn’t any point in having it on while in Colombia. First of all, he didn’t have international service on it. Second of all, cell service and coverage had probably been interrupted by from the disaster.

“Sarge, are they sending in some of the US SAR teams?” one of his men asked as the pilot started to fire up the engines.

“I’m sure they are. We’ll find out more when we get there.”

The man nodded, and Nodin checked over the other guys in his squad before pulling his earbuds out of his pocket and popping them in. He turned on his iPod, letting the music flow into his mind. The noise and vibration of the plane grew louder as they got ready to take off. He was used to the traveling, though the few times he’d gotten to fly commercial, Nodin had enjoyed the comfort...
