What Are AmberPax™ Collections?

Simply put, AmberPax™ Collections are groups of five stories centered around a specific theme. Each story within an AmberPax™ is released individually, on the same day as the others, and can be purchased separately, but these five stories can also be purchased as a single unit (the full AmberPax™) at a discount, currently 25%. Generally, an AmberPax™ is similar to an "anthology" of stories, but instead of the titles being released in only a single volume (file), they are also available individually. These AmberPax™ Collections are sold exclusively through our website and only in electronic format.

THIS BLOG is for news about the Pax Collections - follow it to keep up with releases, find early news of the upcoming collections, and share Pax fun and chat with the authors!

Vibrations by L.A. Witt

Nate Bard is at his wit’s end. There’s something living—or not living, as the case may be—in his house, and if he ever wants to sleep again, it needs to go. Ever the skeptic, Nate balks at his sister’s suggestion of bringing in a psychic, but after another sleepless night, he’s desperate.

Enter Isaac Lane, the hot psychic who immediately senses both the ghost and the homeowner’s doubts.

Within minutes of Isaac’s arrival, weird things start happening. Though Nate hasn’t had a clue what’s been making this ghost so restless, now it seems the ghost is bent on getting the two men together. And neither Nate nor Isaac is able—or willing—to resist.

Read a short excerpt...

...Behind me, the sliding glass door closed, and footsteps approached. I spun around, certain I was about to be face to face with nothing again, but it was Isaac.

He stopped, showing his palms. “Easy. It’s just me.”

I slouched against the railing. “Fuck. I’m going crazy.”

“A lot of people think they’re going crazy when things happen that they can’t explain.”

“Well, that’s why you’re here.” I ran a shaking hand through my hair. “To explain this shit so I don’t lose my mind.”

“That’s what I’m trying to do.” Isaac touched my arm, and I expected electricity to shoot through my skin at the touch, but nothing happened. “Are you sure you’re all right?”

I met his eyes. That was strange. Now he was a few inches away from me, touching me, looking at me, and I didn’t have that weird flustered feeling anymore. That wasn’t to say I’d suddenly stopped being attracted to him. Quite the opposite. It was like something had been fogging my thoughts before, and now I was looking at him with a sense of clarity that had inexplicably abandoned me as soon as I’d laid eyes on him. And with the memory of that “oh my God I want you” attraction still simmering beneath the surface, I still wanted him. Badly. I just felt like I was a bit more in control of those thoughts. It reminded me of those wild nights in my younger days when I’d hook up with someone while we were both drunk, and the next morning, I’d realize, “Hey, I really am into you.”

Except I hadn’t been drunk when Isaac showed up. And if I had been, I sure wouldn’t have sobered up in the time it took a ghost to grab my balls and send me out onto my back deck to catch my damned breath.

“Nate?”

I rubbed a hand over my face. “I’m sorry. Just…rattled.”

“It’s okay.” He released my arm, and I caught myself wishing he hadn’t. He gestured over his shoulder at the kitchen. “So what exactly happened in there?”

I swallowed. “I…I was making coffee, and there was someone in the room. I thought it was you. I was sure it was you.”

“Right, because there’s no one else here.”

“No, it—” My teeth snapped together. As I replayed that bizarre moment in my mind, I couldn’t explain it, but I had been certain the person in the room with me was Isaac. Even now, knowing Isaac had been elsewhere, my mind’s eye insisted that was Isaac...

I stopped brushing Angel and looked over at Jackson. “What if you’re right?”

“Excuse me?” He met my eyes over Petty Cash’s back.

“So what if I took some kid home? Why should it matter to you?”

“Christ, Graham! Are you kidding? He’s a goddamn punk. A protester. One of those animal rights freaks who doesn’t know the first thing about what we do. After all these years in the rodeo, I can’t believe you can look at him without wanting to punch his lights out.”

“So, that’s the issue? Not that I might have gone home with a man, but that he’s not a cowboy? If it’d been you, on the other hand, it’d be okay?”

“Jesus!” Jackson glanced around the barn, as if we were still at the rodeo and he was afraid of who might hear. “Will you listen to yourself? What the hell’s gotten into you?”

“Maybe I’m tired of lying. Aren’t you?”

I was met by a silence so profound, it scared me. Even the horses froze, as if they could sense the force of his anger and were cowed by it. “I am not like you, Graham. Do you hear me? I’m not like you and your goddamn queer boyfriend—”

“Graham?” a voice called from the front of the barn, and Kaz stepped through the door. “You in here?” He was looking down at the floor, being mindful of the mud and manure getting on his nice clean Converse sneakers, but he finally looked up, and when he saw Jackson, he stopped short. His lips—lips I couldn’t stop staring at—made a soft O of surprise.

Talk about timing.

“Christ!” Jackson swore. “Are you fucking kidding me?”

“I can go—” Kaz started to say, but I cut him short.

“No.” I leveled a glare at Jackson. “Jackson was just leaving.”

“Seriously? You want to be alone with this fagg—”

“Enough.” The force behind the word was enough to make the horse I was brushing sidestep away from me, but I wasn’t about to let Jackson push me around. Not tonight. “He’s a guest here, and you’re in my barn,” I warned. “On my property.”

“Not for long.”

That was fine with me. He led Petty Cash away while Kaz stood against the wall, avoiding my gaze. Jackson came back from the stall and headed for the door. He made a point, as he passed Kaz, of bumping into him.

Anger flared up in my chest. I took a step forward, but he was already halfway out the door, and Kaz put a hand out to block me. “Let it go,” he said quietly. “It doesn’t mean a damn thing to me.”

“He’s such a narrow-minded asshole—”

“And starting a fight will only validate it. In his mind, at least.”

The wind went out of my sails and I slumped. I heard Jackson’s truck start, and his wheels spinning on the gravel of my drive. I looked down at my boots. “I’m sorry.”

Kaz stepped closer, ducking his head a bit to interrupt my gaze. “For what?”

“For not standing up for you. This time, and the first time, at the rodeo.”

“It’s not me you need to stand up for, Graham. I can take care of myself just fine. It’s you who has to face this. You’re the one who apparently has to explain something to him. Not me.”

The truth of those words made me hang my head.

“Hey.” He moved closer and put his arms around my waist, settling his slim, lean body against mine. “Forget about him, all right?” He kissed my jaw, and my neck. He stood on his toes, and his lips teased gently against my ear. “I’ve been thinking about you all day.”

Such simple words, but they lightened my mood considerably. A slow warmth began to build in my groin, spreading up and out to my limbs. All thoughts of Jackson faded away. “Really?”

He nodded, moving to brush his lips over mine. “Yep. Thinking about exactly how to tie you up…”

The thought caused my mouth to go dry. I had to swallow hard to respond, and even then, all I managed was, “Oh.”

“And all the things I’ll do to you once I get you that way.”

Roped In by L.A. Witt & Marie Sexton

Graham and his roping partner Jackson have ruled the rodeo scene for ten years running, but lately, Graham’s heart isn’t in the game. He’s tired of the bruises, the cowboy mentality, and the animal rights activists who picket every event. And then there’s Jackson.

Graham and Jackson have been friends since they were boys. But ever since their drunken sexual encounter the year before, things have been awkward. Graham’s accepted that he might be gay, but no matter how attracted he is to other men, he always panics and runs when the clothes start to come off.

Then Graham has a run-in with one of the rodeo protesters, and everything changes. Kaz is young, idealistic, and sexy as hell. And Kaz has an idea for getting Graham past his nerves and into bed.

All they need is a bit of rope.

Read a short excerpt...

...He grabbed my neck, pulled me down to his level, and kissed me.

He fucking kissed me.

One second we were facing off and playing verbal games, and the next…

Fuck.

I didn’t know this guy from Adam, but I sank into that kiss like I’d been waiting for it all damned night. Hell, maybe I had.

He took the lead, too, raising onto his toes to bring himself up to my height. He gave me a few seconds to get used to the fact that our lips were touching before he curved a hand around the back of my neck, held me against him, and pushed my lips apart with his tongue. I let him in. His tasted like lemonade. His features were finer than any other man I’d ever kissed, but they were anything but feminine beneath my fingertips. Sharp, bold, roughened by the slightest dusting of stubble as I slid my hand across his jaw.

His body was slight, but hardly fragile or delicate. Under all those skater clothes, he felt like he was nothing but lean, fit muscle, and it made my head spin. I suddenly wanted to see it. To know what he looked like naked. I wanted to take him back to the house, get him out of these clothes, and find out—

Find out what it’s like to be in bed with a man?

My stomach flipped. That was the part where everything always went to hell. Where my nerves always got the best of me, some alarm blaring in the back of my brain, and a night that started with a hot kiss ended in tepid, awkward excuses before one of us made our escape.

Kaz broke the kiss and lowered himself back to his normal height, though he didn’t let go of my neck. “What’s wrong?”

“I’m…” Absolutely one hundred percent positive this will end in disappointment. “I wasn’t expecting that.”

“Good.” Another grin. “That was the idea.” He pushed himself up and kissed me again.

God, his kiss felt good. I wanted to believe this time could be different, but I could already feel those nerves coiling in the pit of my stomach. I pulled away. Not out of his arms, but away from the kiss. “I don’t know how…” Hell, I didn’t even know how to finish that sentence, let alone the rest.

“Do you always get spooked like this? Or is it because of me?”

I laughed nervously. Maybe I should have been embarrassed, but there was something about his no-nonsense attitude that told me it was okay to be honest. “It’s not you.”

He didn’t let me go, though. If anything, his grip on me tightened. He stood on his toes again to touch his lips to mine. “Interesting.” He reached down to brush my erection through my jeans. The tiniest touch, but it took my breath away. “Seems like you’re into it, though.”

“I am.” And it was strange what a relief it was to finally say that out loud. “I just never know what to do. Or how to do it. Or if I should.” I paused, heat rushing into my cheeks. “And I usually freak out. Kill the mood and bolt before we get too far. I kind of…panic.”

He nodded as if he understood. “I could fix that, you know,” he murmured against my lips.

“How?

“Remember when I offered to tie you up like one of your calves?”

Oh. Fuck.

“You were serious about that?”

He shrugged. “Not at the time, but I am now.” He drew back and looked up at me, eyes gleaming with God knew what kind of dirty thoughts. “If you’re game...”

Wrenches, Regrets and Reality Checks by L.A. Witt

Ever since Reggie’s garage became part of a popular reality show, business has been booming. As much as he hates playing games with the network, at least he doesn’t have to worry about his bottom line anymore.

As the show’s lowest-ranking producer, Wes is tasked with proposing a new spinoff show to Reggie. He has a hard enough time looking the sexy mechanic in the eye on a normal day, but this time, he’s holding cards he can’t show. With execs breathing down his neck, he’s there to pitch a show he knows Reggie will never agree to do, even if his refusal puts his existing show on the line.

The network is counting on Reggie refusing to sign. But they’re not counting on their messenger falling for the man they’re trying to fire...

Genres: Gay/Contemporary
Heat Level: 3
Length: Novella (18k words)

Read a short excerpt...

...How the guys in this garage functioned with the swarm of cameras and crew hovering around, Wes would never know. Then again, after four and a half seasons of Wrench Wars, he supposed they were used to it.

Wes didn’t like being in front of a camera—thank God he was just a producer—so he hung back and watched from the sidelines. Fortunately for him, there was a section of the shop that was off limits to the cameras. It was separated from that portion of the garage by a wall, and the windows had long since been tinted to prevent the cameras from catching anything on this side. Wes watched through the darkened glass, waiting for the shop’s owner to take a break.

“You’re gonna be waiting a while.” Kasey, one of the mechanics who never went over to the other side—to the red zone, as they call called it—stopped beside Wes and gestured at the window with a wrench. “They’ve got a good six, eight hours of work left on that thing.”

Wes glanced at his watch, then at Kasey. “It’s almost five o’clock.”

“Yeah.” Kasey nodded toward the window. “And they’ve got a good six or eight hours of work left on that thing.” He chuckled. “You might want to come by tomorrow.”

Wes pursed his lips. “They still take breaks, though, don’t they?”

Kasey responded with a snort of derision and shook his head. Without a word, he walked away.

Wes faced the window again. He didn’t have to ask about Kasey’s reaction. The shop’s collective contempt toward the network, especially the producers, was well-known. And given the tight deadlines the men worked under in order to maintain the “realistic” tension and suspense on the show, he shouldn’t have been surprised that state-mandated breaks weren’t exactly enforced.

Thanks to the tinted glass and the task he was currently focused on, Reggie couldn’t know that Wes was watching him. Even if he felt like he was being watched, he’d probably blame it on the camera that was just inches away from his head.

Wes, however, was acutely aware of Reggie’s presence. In spite of the glass and the wall, he felt him as if the man were standing right there in his face instead of arguing animatedly with Ray or whatever his name was about something relating to a muscle car’s undercarriage. His presence hummed on the ends of Wes’s nerves just like it always did. They’d only met a handful of times—when the network had pitched the show, during a few visits to assure the network things were going swimmingly, a couple of meetings via Skype—and Wes was still as off balance as he’d been the first time, when the tattooed, stubbled mechanic had caught him completely off guard. He’d expected a grizzled old dude like the ones who ran the other shops, the one they competed against in the “war” aspect of their show, but Reggie had been the polar opposite. He wasn’t more than a year or two older than Wes himself, but had that weathered edge of a man who’d spent his life doing manual labor. That edge that fucked with Wes’s ability to form a coherent thought...

Never Again...Again by L.A. Witt

Travis has been in love with Mitch since their college days, but they’ve never been able to make it work. While Travis—now an A-list actor—is out, Mitch is not, and they’re both too high-profile to date in secret.

Instead, they make do with the occasional hot liaison in the middle of the night in shady, backwoods motels where no one will catch them. And every time they do, Travis promises himself he’s done being the skeleton in Mitch’s closet, and it really will be the last time.

Now tonight, he’s had enough. He loves Mitch, but he can’t keep putting himself through this. Just one more hot night together, and then he’s gone...unless Mitch can change his mind before Travis walks out the door forever...

Genres: Gay/Contemporary/The Arts
Heat Level: 3
Length: Extended Amber Kiss (11k words)

Read a short excerpt...

...Mitch cleared his throat. “I’m glad you called.”

“Me too.”

He exhaled and stepped a little closer. “I thought you didn’t want to do this anymore.”

“I never said I didn’t want to.” Christ, he was almost close enough to touch. “Just that we probably shouldn’t.”

“That’s true.” Closer. “We definitely shouldn’t.”

“But here we are.”

He stopped, keeping a few inches between us. “You do want to be here, though, right?”

“Absolutely.” There was nowhere in the world I wanted to be more than right here with him. I took a deep breath, willing my heart to slow down and my stomach to stop contorting beneath my ribcage. “I…I do think we should settle things.”

Just like it had so many times back in our younger days, before things got so complicated, Mitch’s left eyebrow arched, and a second later, the corner of his mouth rose. “Settle them how?”

I shifted my weight to hide the shaking in my knees. “I…I’m not even sure. Figure out if we should keep doing this at all.”

“We both know we shouldn’t.”

“Yeah, but we keep coming back.”

“I know we do. I just can’t…” Mitch reached across the narrow void and touched the side of my face. He trailed his fingers down my cheek. “Travis…”

I avoided his eyes and whispered, “We’re torturing ourselves, you know.”

“We are. But I have as hard a time staying away as you do.”

I nodded. “I know.”

“If it could be different—”

“Don’t.” Shaking my head, I met his gaze. “We’ve been over this a hundred times.”

Mitch sighed. “I know. And God, I wish things could be different.”

But it couldn’t. There was no point in even going there because we both knew damn well that this thing couldn’t exist outside cheap motel rooms and secret meetings. I was already out, and whatever damage that was ever going to do to my career had been done. If I’d still been closeted, maybe we could be seen together. Play it off as two old friends catching up over coffee or something. But the media already scrutinized his every move, and they scrutinized every man who came within an arm’s length of me. While most of my male friends could just brush that off, it could never be that simple with Mitch. He could ignore it, but his public? His colleagues? Not so much.

He smoothed my hair. “We still have tonight.”

I nodded, trailing my fingers down his cheek. “This has to be the last time, though.”

“I know.” He gently grasped my hand and kissed my palm. “It will be.”

Of course it would be. It was always the last time. Before the sun came up, we’d both walk away and promise never to do this again. Again...
