What Are AmberPax™ Collections?

Simply put, AmberPax™ Collections are groups of five stories centered around a specific theme. Each story within an AmberPax™ is released individually, on the same day as the others, and can be purchased separately, but these five stories can also be purchased as a single unit (the full AmberPax™) at a discount, currently 25%. Generally, an AmberPax™ is similar to an "anthology" of stories, but instead of the titles being released in only a single volume (file), they are also available individually. These AmberPax™ Collections are sold exclusively through our website and only in electronic format.

THIS BLOG is for news about the Pax Collections - follow it to keep up with releases, find early news of the upcoming collections, and share Pax fun and chat with the authors!

The Magic of Texts by K-lee Klein

The original theme for this PAX was getting connected. I knew right away that I wanted to do a relationship based, or at least, started through texting. I wanted to take an old-fashioned blind date situation, shove it into a paper bag then shake the crap out of it.

In the end, my idea turned out more like the blind auditions on the reality show, The Voice, and that was exactly how I wanted it to go. I wanted the blind date feel—nervousness, insecurity, maybe even a little fear of what was going to happen—but tossed together with a little obscure knowledge of each other. I didn't want Lewis and Jerry getting too personal, didn't want them sharing whether they had blue eyes, were in good shape or wore sneakers or cowboy boots.

Mostly, I didn't want Lewis and Jerry to have a share their appearances. That's one of the best things about The Voice, the anonymity of not being seen as well as heard. The contestants are judged purely on how they sound, on the talent they have instead of what image they portray or how they look.

I wanted that for Lewis and Jerry. I wanted them to be comfortable in knowing things about each other, maybe little quirks and mannerisms learned through the magic of texts. I didn't want someone setting them up on a real blind date, whispering in their ears about the other's curls or baldness, or how tall they were. I wanted that part to completely a surprise.

Hopefully I pulled it off and hopefully you'll enjoy reading Lewis and Jerry's Textual Attraction.

Textual Attraction by K-lee Klein

Lewis has spent most of his adult life looking after his aging parents, and he recently ended a relationship with a domineering guy who’d been nothing but bad for him. Despite his less-than-stellar track record with men, he’s still hopeful there’s someone out there for him, but he’s learned to be careful with his heart. So he can’t figure out why a cryptic, gruff, drunken voice mail from a stranger named Jerry doesn’t make him hit the DELETE button. It’s clear the man’s got the wrong number. But when Jerry begins to text, Lewis finally responds, saying he’s not the guy Jerry wants. Jerry, however, is nothing if not persistent, and he keeps texting and teasing Lewis, even after he knows the truth.

Lewis is surprised when something sparks between them. Jerry turns out to be charming and witty, and they develop an odd friendship through text messages. When Jerry suggests they finally meet in person, Lewis is apprehensive, yet curious. Can he take the big step to meet Jerry face-to-face? More importantly, can he maybe even trust Jerry with his heart?

Read a short excerpt...

...The first phone call came when Lewis Snell was in the tub. He’d been enjoying a favorite read on his iPad, with his phone close by in case something exciting happened to rock his world on Facebook or Twitter. He’d nearly dropped his precious pad in the bubbly water when the ringing started and the phone clattered incessantly against the marble countertop because no one—absolutely no one—ever called him. And really, who ever used their cellphone for real calls anyhow?

He ignored it the best he could, silently wondering if he’d ever set up the voicemail or if anyone actually left messages anymore either. Even his seventy-seven-year-old mother texted him at least twice a day, plus emailed him more than that, rather than picking up the phone. And speaking of her, Lewis didn’t remember changing his ringtone to “YMCA.” She’d obviously gotten hold of it and worked her magic on it—devious black magic in Lewis’ book.

Once he was perfectly wrinkled from the lavender bathwater, Lewis crawled carefully from the tub. He wrapped his favorite white, fresh-from-the-dryer, Egyptian cotton towel around his shoulders while he stared at the blinking message on his phone.

You have one missed call.

You have one voicemail.

Apparently, his mailbox had been set up after all, but whether Lewis knew the password would be revealed soon enough.

After grabbing up the phone and his tablet, Lewis padded sleepily from his en suite to his bedroom, quickly tugging on his plaid pajama pants and oversized Glee T-shirt to beat the chill of the room from settling in. He popped his evening meds, then tucked himself into bed with his iPad and phone at the ready.

Princess Peony, his beloved and bossy feline, soon joined him, nudging against his chin, until he made room for her on his lap, while he reclined against the leather headboard. She pawed and kneaded him into the best cat bed possible before purring herself to sleep with Lewis absently stroking her fur. In his other hand, he gripped his phone as if it were ready to explode.

“I’m acting ridiculous,” he said to absolutely no one. “It’s only a phone call. Doesn’t mean it has to be bad news or any news at all.” He’d seen his mother earlier, and he’d heard his father shuffling around the apartment, so Lewis’ two biggest fears were unfounded.

With the gentle slide of his finger, he arrived at the voicemail page. He didn’t recognize the number, but he threw caution to the wind, guessed his password in two shots, and pressed the play button.

“Hey, Tom. It’s Jerry…”

Tom and Jerry, really? Now all Lewis could picture was a feuding cat and mouse, and that made him feel old—old and extremely curious.

“I know we didn’t end on good terms last week, but I found that color-challenged knit cap of yours in between the cushions of my couch. I know you’re pretty attached to it, so I figured you’d want it back. You already have my number…or maybe you don’t. It’s 555-6722, so, you know, if you want it just give me a call or else I’ll just drop it in the lap of that homeless guy down on Seventh. Doesn’t matter to me. Yeah, okay…well, later…or not.”

Lewis quite liked the deep, raspy voice. It was one of very few kinks for him, surely obtained from television and movies with hot growly men in them. Kink aside, he found himself interested in the stranger in the message, despite the weird cartoon names and telltale slur he attributed to alcohol. The background noise was rife with loud music and glass bottles clinking together. Calling from a bar to return, or not return, an ugly cap didn’t seem the perfect way to go about talking to someone. But who was Lewis, who rarely used the phone at all, to judge?...

Writing Favorite Characters Can Make You Crazy (in a Good Way) by K-lee Klein

I love writing new stories and new characters, but there's just something special about dusting off some old favorites. And I mean favorites of mine, not just readers.

Maybe it's the easy familiarity of not having to start from scratch, of already knowing physical characteristics, mannerisms, likes and dislikes. It's similar to sliding into a worn-to-perfection pair of boots and taking them for a long walk because you know they fit you perfectly and won't give you blisters along the way.

That's not to say those familiar characters don't make me work just as hard to tell their current story. It doesn't mean I can get lazy and just slap something on the page for the sake of, well, slapping something on the page. Case in point, Unwanted Hearts stars Brett & JT, and they've become just like family to me since the first book in the series, Unbreak My Heart.

Brett Taylor is by far my favourite character to write, too. He's always so vivid in my head, in both good and bad ways. I hear his accent, his inflections and slang clearly. I see the way he tosses his hair or tucks it behind his ears, the way he can't help his brilliant blue eyes from turning into instant weapons of mass-flirting, and uses his crooked grin to get his own way. I can also see inside his heart as well as he can see inside of mine.

Maybe I still feel a little guilty about breaking him so badly in the original book so I let him get away with being his bossy self...sometimes. Of course, he can't really complain since the love of his life rose from the ashes of his pain. Yeah, Brett and I have a special relationship. He attempts to boss my muse around, tries to butt in when it's not his turn, fills my head with his sweet Southern drawl until I have to take the notes he forces on me, even if I just save them forever. But in his defence, Brett Taylor is also one of the sweetest, most giving, and emotionally-aware men I've ever "known."

The other thing about writing familiar characters is always hoping they aren't only my just favorites because then I'd be writing books only for myself. And that's a little weird and counterproductive even for me. Fortunately, I haven't run into that particular problem and most especially with Brett and JT. And for anyone that's interested, Brett has already been whispering in my ear about a special Christmas short story so it seems he's getting his way again. I guess y'all will have to stayed tuned.

Have a great weekend and thanks for stopping by.

Unwanted Hearts by K-lee Klein

(Part of the Unbreak My Heart series)

Brett Taylor has no complaints about his life. He has his man JT, his health, and a positive outlook on the future. He does have one problem, though. He doesn’t have a clear plan for what he should do with the ranch he inherited from his former lover.

When an unexpected and heart-tugging situation is dropped in his lap, he discovers there are more futures to be considered than just his own. With disclosures, both good and bad, from both his mom and his long-time ranch foreman, and unbridled support from JT, he makes a decision that will change not only his life, but other innocent lives in desperate need of Brett’s and JT’s special brand of love.

Read a short excerpt...

...“Kid!” Brett Taylor took the porch steps in one giant leap, lucky he didn’t trip and break his face. He did, however, swing the screen door open so hard the spring snapped back and the thing hit him in the ass. “Hey, JT! Where are you, babe?”

JT Campbell poked his head around the corner of the family room, amusement curving one side of his mouth. “What’re you yelling about? What did Whiz do now?”

Brett took a deep breath, then blew it out slowly as he took off his hat and rubbed his head. He cursed his long hair for getting in the way. It was hotter than Jesus’ damnation outside and he’d run all the way from the top of the driveway. He wished Whiz the Wonder Dog was the problem this time. “I need you to come with me.”

He slid past JT without paying him any mind, his own thoughts scrambling to figure out what he needed. There were a few dishtowels in the drawer, but something more substantial would be better. “Can you grab those old towels in the closet upstairs? The ones I stored away after Mama bought us the new ones.”

JT didn’t listen to Brett, and that wasn’t all that unusual. Of course, his sweat-drenched, bare torso was a little distracting…which was usual. “What’s gotten into you, cowboy?”

“I’ll um…explain outside. But we gotta git.”

“Okay. Just let me clean up a bit. It was hot in the barn—”

“Gotta be now. Would you grab those towels, please?” He didn’t wait for an answer, just shucked his damp T-shirt for another hanging over the back of his office chair. “And put a darn shirt on so I can think around you.”

With a now-clothed JT in tow, it didn’t take long to gather what Brett hoped would work for what he’d found near the road. He didn’t sprint like before, his flaring nerves tripping him up rather than helping him along. His slower pace did manage to quiet his heart and loosen the rope of anger knotted in his gut just a little though.

Where the driveway met the dusty gravel road, Brett steered JT toward the long grass in the ditch. He tucked him in close with an arm across his chest so they wouldn’t tumble into the hole, then practically tippy-toed into the long blades. Brett felt JT’s breath hot on his back when he stepped up beside him.

Brett crouched beside the flattened-down patch among the overgrown weeds and felt JT do the same. The kid slid a hand across Brett’s shoulders, his voice an inpatient hush in Brett’s ear. “Brett. What are we—holy shit.”

JT’s reaction hadn’t been all that different from Brett’s own not ten minutes before. Of course, Brett had added a few more cuss words and a whole lot of pissed-off Texan attitude.

“Are those…?”

“Yep. Four of them.”

“But who the hell would do something like that?”

“Hopefully no one we know.”

“Jesus! Did you see any other dogs around?”

“Nope, and the little fellas are lucky they didn’t become coyote snacks.”

Brett knelt closer to the four squeaking, squirming newborns. In almost forty-four years of life, he’d only ever seen such tiny critters once before, and he still thought about them now and again.

The pups couldn’t have been more than a few days old, and just left all helpless and alone...

Returning to the Perfect Moment by K-lee Klein

I love series or sequels or whatever you want to call them. Maybe it's because I have trouble letting go of beloved characters both when I read and write them. There's just something satisfying and comfortable about getting back into the heads of these familiar and cherished men who still want to talk to me.

Always the Perfect Moment is indeed a sequel to Never the Perfect Moment that was released last year. It's also a sequel that was never supposed to happen. When I wrote the first story it was also for a PAX collection, but I'd had no intention of continuing on in the lives of Bryan & Chrys...until I did my first read-through, and BAM!, I knew I needed to write Chrys' POV at least once.

As an author, I always wish for readers to take a liking to my characters. Sometimes it matters enough to me that I'd almost rather not know if they did or not - strictly out of insecurity. But when there is positive feedback and sweet demands for another story, I get tingly all over.

Never the Perfect Moment received fabulous attention and feedback, plus my MCs, Chrys & Bryan, received oodles and oodles of love. So here they are, back in a new story that includes not only them but little Mickey (who got his own fanmail), Laura (the fabulously sweet but snarky ex-wife) and Pops (Chrys' dad).  I hope everyone enjoys the next part of their story because I enjoyed writing it.

One last thing - I'm not sure I've been one hundred percent accurate in saying I never intended on continuing their story because, the truth is, Chrys & Bryan had me at hello.

Always the Perfect Moment by K-lee Klein

(Book 1 of the Perfect Moments series)

Bryan Monroe took a chance when he told Chrys Delos, his best friend and partner on the police force, that he loved him, but he never thought he’d get so lucky when Chrys returned the feelings. Now, although he and Chrys are over-the-moon happy, Bryan wants to take their relationship to the next level in two big ways.

Chrys has healed nicely from the gunshot wound that could have cost him his life. But now that it’s time for him to return to work, he and his partner-turned-lover must navigate their new relationship on the job.

It’s one thing to clearly define the love they feel for each other, but it could be an entirely new challenge when they tell their friends and family about the change in their partnership...

Genres: Gay/Contemporary/Series
Heat Level: 3
Length: Novella (25k words)

Read a short excerpt...

...“You ready for today?”

Chrys Delos cautiously cracked one eye open to see a sleep-creased but gorgeously bed-headed Bryan Monroe grinning over his shoulder. Shifting sluggishly to his back, he squinted up at the man who hovered deliciously over him. It was too damn bright or just too damn early to be so damn bright, and it wasn’t until that moment that he realized he’d become lazy during his time off, especially after a slow, meandering week in Greece with his pops.

His flight had been late, finally bringing him home at three in the morning instead of ten at night. And Bryan had been there, bleary-eyed and half asleep, holding up the wall near the baggage claim. He’d been there despite the lateness, despite having to work in the morning, despite Chrys insisting he and his dad could easily take a taxi.

Of course, Chrys had secretly wanted him to be there. He’d never had a boyfriend wait for him anywhere, let alone under such horrible circumstances. Even being half-dead with jet lag, hungry, thirsty, sore from sitting in one place so long, Bryan had instantly cured him of all his ailments.

“Hey, eyes open.”

Chrys did as he was instructed. Fortunately, he wasn’t subjected to the harsh light again as Bryan leaned down to press their sleepy smiles together. Their first kiss of the day was unhurried, soft and unrepentant of their shared morning breath. They’d worked that out from the beginning. If they wanted to kiss before freshening up, then they would damn well do it. And they did…three times before Bryan spoke again.

“Think you can handle all that responsibility? Paperwork, keeping the coffee flowing, and answering the phone.” Bryan’s grin was infectious even if Chrys was the butt of the jokes. “You better be on your toes. Who knows how many little old ladies will call about their poor kitties getting caught in a tree.”

With a growl and roll, Chrys straddled Bryan in one easy motion. “I think you have me confused with a hot fireman from one of your calendars.”

His shoulder felt pretty good, just a twinge when the muscles contracted or he moved it too quickly. He knew how lucky he’d been in the shooting, also knew what a jackass move he’d made that could have got him killed. Bryan, and then Pops, had been sure to knock that into his head once and for all, and more than a few times.

And Chrys wasn’t an idiot. He knew sound, and more or less threatening, advice when he heard it. No more putting himself in danger for others if it could cause detriment to himself because the second worse thing in the world would be dying now that he had what he wanted. The first, of course, was losing Bryan. Life was short, too short to be stupid and inattentive.

His new life goal had been one of the reasons he’d spent a week in Greece with his dad. And seeing the joy on the old guy’s face had been a reward for Chrys, a token to Pops for all the worry Chrys had put him through. He’d really wanted Bryan to come along but the short notice hadn’t made it plausible.

Next time, Chrys told himself.

In a sick sort of way, getting shot had proven to have its benefits, as well—namely Chrys’ partner going from best friend to lover. The outcome had been nothing short of amazing and more than Chrys could ever have hoped for...

Another Excerpt from Moonstone by K-lee Klein

Want another taste of Moonstone by K-lee Klein? Well, read on!

*_*_*

It was like a maze of hallways, one leading to the next, with the odd fork in the road here and there. Ky felt like he was being sucked into some weird dimension with a whole lot of portals but no actual people or even signs of life. When the end of the hall was finally in sight, he released an embarrassing sigh of relief.

The last door was painted with the most extraordinary mural Ky had ever seen—two small naked figures with no discerning gender standing beside a flowing river of shimmering waves in bright blues and dark purples. Their arms were extended over their heads, as if they were reaching for the stunningly beautiful sun shining above. Iridescent stars, hearts, and wisps of electric color shot from the points of the sun, the sky a scramble of light purple and turquoise. Ky had never seen anything like it.

But the most stunning part was the dark blue that Ky would have sworn actually beamed with light. It was everywhere in the painting—outlining the sun and bursting from its rays, initiating waves and whirlpools in the water, even shading the landscape in brilliance. The color was mesmerizing, and Ky couldn’t tear himself away from it. He could have stared at it all day, until a painful flash of light and a wave of dizziness swept through him. He slapped a hand on the wall to steady himself, forcing his eyes closed and swallowing a cottony lump in his throat.

“Hey!” Blake’s voice broke through Ky’s reverie. “You okay? Look like you’re gonna pass out or something. Why don’t you come in and sit down? Just drop the box anywhere.”

He followed her voice into the room, his vision blurred and eyes teary, but not before he brushed his fingers over the brilliance of the door’s artwork. It felt warm and gave him a pleasant spark from his fingertips to the top of his shoulder.

“I’m…I’m okay.” He squared his shoulders again, straightening his body to its six-foot form. He struggled to return to reality, squinting as Blake finally reappeared in front of him. “So you, um, you don’t work here?”

Blake turned to look at him, reaching for the box he still clutched to his chest. “Naw. Blue’s a solo act. I don’t have an artistic bone in my body, at least in that way. I live close, so I help out all the guys. One of them’s been teaching me yoga so at least I look like I have a purpose around here. You sure you’re okay? You look kinda pale.”

Ky ignored her worries, breathing deeply and swallowing the last of the cotton in his mouth. “I do yoga.”

It was a matter-of-fact statement and totally random, especially since he wasn’t sure TV yoga counted as real yoga. Blake didn’t seem to notice though. She smirked, hoisting the box onto the dark blue counter that appeared to pave the way into the shop. Ky felt like he needed to explain.

“They made us do it in one of my group homes. It’s relaxing.”

“No explanations necessary, man. Just because you’re big and muscly doesn’t mean you can’t have some Zen in your life. We should totally do a session sometime. Oli loves to have new people in his class.” Blake turned away from Ky, and a big voice soared out of her tiny body. “Blue! Get your lazy butt out here. You have an actual customer.”

Ky stepped back at the abrupt change in Blake’s tone and volume. He tripped on the mat by the door, catching himself from completely falling on his ass by grabbing the edge of the counter. He was obviously still a little dizzy but had no idea why.

“Fuck. Sorry,” he said to Blake, as she incredulously looked on at his antics.

“Blake, you aren’t supposed to damage the clients before they pay.”

Ky glanced to the side, and discovered the most incredible sea-blue eyes he’d ever seen. “Um…no, that was my fault.”

Mr. Blue-eyes—Ky assumed his eyes matched his name—flashed a sweet smile, holding a hand out to Ky. “No problem, dude. I’m Blue.”

“Kyle—Ky Adamson. I guess I’m late. Sorry about that.”

Blue grinned crookedly at him with a teasing wink. “We’re not too strict on time around here. Wanna come on through and have a chat?”

Ky could only nod, his heart thumping out a strong bass line in his ears. He wasn’t sure if it was the prospect of the tattoo itself, or the open friendliness of Blue’s handsome face that had him suddenly on edge. Electrified nerves skittered under his skin, trickling down his spine, his palms instantly clammy as Blue tipped his head for Ky to follow him.

There was something about the slighter-framed man that sent a little series of jolts straight to Ky’s gut. It might have simply been the knowledge that he was there so Blue could purposely inflict pain on him—surely not that much though. He hoped. It could also have been the weighty issue occupying three-quarters of his mind. Strangely enough, it was more of a this guy couldn’t possibly be making my dick hard feeling.

Of course, watching Blue bend down to pick up an errant pen, his low-riding jeans sliding down just enough to see the shadows of tattoos sticking up alongside the top of his butt crack, might have revved his engine a little, too.

“Have a seat, Ky.”

The instant familiarity of Blue using his nickname made Ky relax into the big-cushioned couch he’d been directed to. “Thanks,” he muttered when Blue settled beside him, tucking one leg underneath his bottom as he reached for a clipboard on a small table beside the sofa.

Everything in the small room was well used, or in a lot of cases, Ky surmised, just used period. Once he’d finished checking out the decor and necessities, not much more than the couch and table really—and no tattoo machines, needles or bottles of ink. He turned back to Blue, who listed his head to the side.

“You nervous? Not too late to change your—”

“Yeah, I know. Just getting used to my surroundings.” Ky shifted farther back into the worn leather, hoping he gave the appearance of being more relaxed than he actually was. “Interesting place you’ve got here.”

He forced a pathetic grin, looking to Blue for a reaction, which he received in the form of a low chuckle. Heat seeped into Ky’s cheeks, so he quickly continued, “That…that painting on the door is amazing. I don’t know much about art, but it looks pretty cool.”

Blue’s vibrant eyes lowered beneath long, dark lashes and peeked out from beneath a fringe of messy hair. He had shaggy, dark brown, out-of-control curls, but as he pushed his hair back, Ky saw the distinct tracks where his hair had been shaved close to his scalp on one side. He had an interesting look, to say the least. Not to mention the full beard and mustache that Ky was honestly not sure how he felt about. He’d never been one for facial hair, and found himself wondering if it itched.

“I did it on a whim. Turned out okay, I guess. So, yeah, thanks.” Blue drew Ky out of his pondering, gazing determinedly into his eyes again. “You ready to start?”

Ky twisted so he was facing Blue dead-on. There were still faint flutters of anxiety in his belly, but Blake had been right, Blue made him feel more comfortable than he’d expected.

“Let’s do it. Shoot.”

“Cool.” Blue grinned at him as he clicked the end of his pen, then bowed his head again. Ky caught himself wanting to reach out and touch the dark mop of hair that Blue kept trying to sweep away from his eyes. “Just gonna ask you a few questions. Let’s see…are you high?”

Unable to keep his jaw hinged, Ky gaped at Blue, his eyes wide and burning a little with the effort. “Am I…am I what? High?”

“Around here its question number one. Sorry, but I’ve worked on enough stoned people to know it’s not a good idea. If you’re tweaking you don’t tend to feel the pain as much, but at the same time, you’re more likely to not have put much thought into the art you want on your body. No offense, man.”

Shifting a little in his chair, Ky furrowed his brow. “Not high or drunk. Not offended either.” He definitely couldn’t take offense since he’d asked Blake if Blue tattooed while he was high before even meeting him.

“All right. Ever been inked before?”

“No.”

“How are you with pain?”

“High tolerance.”

Blue lifted his head, his icy blue orbs skating over Ky’s face. “That shiner looks like it could have caused a little discomfort. Bruise on your cheek looks fresh, too.”

He paused, as Ky concentrated on his lap, then looked back up, a slow heat starting from his ears and running into his cheeks again. He’d forgotten about the current state of his face, and suddenly everything felt awkward.

“Not on the run from some mob guys or the law, are ya?”

The sweet smile that accompanied Blue’s teasing put Ky at a little more ease. He forced a half-grin. “Nope. Just a hobby.”

“Dangerous hobby,” Blue said with a low whistle.

Ky immediately wanted to disappear into the concrete floor. Since when did a pair of pretty blue eyes and a sexy voice make him want to do anything but dismiss whoever was behind them? He didn’t blush for anyone or anything—usually. And he definitely didn’t need the distraction to his real purpose for being there.

Moonstone by K-lee Klein

(Book 1 of the Stone Magic series)

Ky’s fought his way to the boxing championship for the third time, but now the fight of his life isn’t against an opponent in the ring. He’s battling a darkness within himself that he can’t ignore and can’t control. If he fails, everything he’s spent his life working for will be gone, and he can’t see a path to victory. Only a a hunch sends him looking for help in the most unusual places.

Blue’s a quiet guy, living for his family and the art of his tattoos. He’s created his shop, Blue’s Dungeon, to be a place for the celebration of art on skin—simple, friendly, and mostly uncomplicated—and Blue likes it that way.

But when Ky shows up in Blue’s tattoo parlor, desperately searching for a lifeline, it’s the beginning of something magical for both men...

...Blue was pretty happy with his work. For being nothing more than a series of moon phases on the inside of Ky’s arm, it had turned out pretty awesome. It struck a chord in his memory, too. Maybe he’d seen it in a book or Ky had taken it from somewhere Blue had been. It didn’t matter, just as long as it had turned out the way his client wanted it. He’d stopped trying to match people with the tattoos they wanted. It was all personal preference, and if anyone should understand that concept, it was him.

Still it was a strange choice for someone who obviously took the term “tough guy” to heart, and had molded his body to fit the image. He wasn’t huge, like some of the muscly boys Blue had met or been attracted to. More toned and sculpted, hard lines visible through his T-shirt and the tight fit of his sweatpants. And despite the bruises, and the scar down the side of Ky’s face, he was fucking hot.

Ky had insisted the tattoo be outlined in dark blue instead of black, something not so common in Blue’s experience. Most people wanted the inside colored and the outside standard black, or the whole thing completely black, as was most often the case. But Ky had wanted the opposite; the four moons shaded and swirled with black and blue, but the silhouette the exact shade of blue of the skull on the wall.

He examined his work a little more closely, lightly holding Ky’s wrist, while he wiped away the excess ink and trails of blood. He was hyper-aware of Ky’s breath warming his shoulder and the side of his neck. It stirred something inside him, something he wasn’t altogether comfortable with. Something akin to desire, but more.

When he started to pull back, loosening his grip on Ky’s arm, calloused fingers wrapped around his hand. He looked up into bleary green orbs, their hold both mystifying and uncomfortable. Blue supposed he might have lost his mind when he leaned over and let Ky press a kiss to his lips. Later, the whole thing was hazy at best, except for the sweet taste.

The kiss was tentative at first—muted, wary, little unsure touches—but it escalated quickly to desperate and sloppy when Ky tucked his arm closer to his body, moving it from the armrest and extending his neck. He reached for Blue, awkwardly securing him with one hand around the back of his head. They slotted their mouths together harder, in an uncoordinated clash of lips, with no direction or consideration for just what the hell they were doing.

Blue eased back as soon as his mind unscrambled, his common sense overriding the lust playing havoc under his itching skin. “Wow,” he groaned, swiping the back of his hand over his mouth. “That should not have happened.”

Ky turned a lovely shade of pink as he jumped from the chair, stumbling over his own feet in his haste to move. “I’m sorry. Did I…fuck, I thought you were sending off some hard signals. I never meant to—Jesus, I’m an idiot.”

“No you’re not.” Blue stepped closer again. He stroked a hand down Ky’s back, careful to make the connection purely platonic even though his lips still burned from the kiss. “Let me wash up, then get you bandaged, yeah?”

Ky’s face retained some of the blush, but at least the palpable tension appeared to fall away as Blue smiled and motioned to the couch in the corner. Ky settled into the cushions, but stayed precariously on the edge, his fingers white-knuckling his thighs. Blue struggled with not kissing him again when he returned.

Ky’s face shone with embarrassment, his eyes clouded with what Blue hoped wasn’t disgust...

Tender Is the Knight by K-lee Klein

I had never written any sort of historical story before I wrote Tender is the Knight, and to be perfectly honest, I was more than a little intimidated. I'm not afraid of research or trying to get my facts straight, but obviously historical accuracy is very important in undertaking a specific period in time.

Details can make or break a story whether it's contemporary, historical, paranormal, etc., so adding aspects like food, color, material and specific names for clothing, are always important. You'd think that doing research would be a breeze on the Internet with so many options, so many sites, and so many supposedly official opinions, but sometimes too many sources can be detrimental.

One of the most difficult things for me was figuring out how my characters would talk—the words they'd use, the ones they wouldn't, how they would address others, even how they would speak in a more intimate situation. It got to the point where I felt hopelessly stuck before I even began. Eventually I pulled on my big girl panties and sought out a source that, though not the right country or even time frame, was somewhat similar in formal speech and very familiar to me—anything and everything to do with Alexander the Great.

You see, I became hopelessly addicted to the great Alexander and his childhood friend and lifetime lover, Hephaistion, when I saw the movie then started reading fanfiction. Eventually I wrote some of own, but I also enjoyed the research part of it. I devoured anything to do with Xander and Phai, and in some strange way, my addiction got me over the hump in dealing with Tristan and Clayne in Medieval England. And it really wasn't such a chore to have to watch Colin Farrell and Jared Leto speaking to each other. Rawr.

Despite all my new and old research, I did cheat a little. Tender is the Knight is set in a universe similar to Camelot and King Arthur so I did get to play with some of the facts just a wee bit. Hopefully it all came out good in the wash, and my first semi-historical story will find someone who enjoys it. Cheers.

Tender Is the Knight by K-lee Klein

Tristan is a skilled knight, sworn to defend the Kingdom of Leadon. He’s devoted his life to being the best he can be, and he’s as steadfast and loyal as his knighted father was before him. But when the king of Leadon informs Tristan he’s arranged a marriage for him in order to unite Leadon with a neighboring kingdom, Tristan, for the first time, balks at an order. He cannot and will not marry the princess because his heart already belongs to another.

Clayne is the poor assistant to the village blacksmith, and content with his station in life. Especially since he has the love and support of a very special man...his very own tender knight. He and Tristan grew up together, forging a bond first of friendship, and then of love, and even when Tristan became a knight of the kingdom, nothing could shake them apart. But the king’s command that Tristan marry a princess just might.

When the king threatens Clayne’s life to get his way, Tristan is forced to choose between following the dictate to save the man he loves, or a riskier plan that will endanger them both and challenge everything in which they believe...

Read a short excerpt...

...“My life is how I like it.” Tristan finally raised his gaze, eyes narrowing in the opposing way he’d been taught not to behave in the presence of royalty. “I mean no disrespect, but I cannot go through with such an arrangement. I don’t believe your offer is the right one for me.”

The king lowered himself to his chair again. “You are your father’s son,” Garrick said, jutting out his chin in disregard of the statement. Tristan fumed but held strong. “He said the same when he disrespected me,” the king continued. “Would you say his fate turned out as he had hoped after his treason?”

“My father? What do you…my father died defending you. He died with honor and loyalty to you.”

“His loyalty faltered when he disagreed with my orders. You do not wish to join him in his treasonous conduct, do you, Tristam?”

Tristan was on his feet so fast his head spun. His mouth dropped open and he was instantly freezing. One plus one suddenly added up to two. “Why would…how could you? My father was a good man. Surely you don’t mean what you’re saying?”

“If you do not wish to hear the truth, that is your choice. Consider it all water under the bridge now. It is you we are talking about, not your father. I am offering you freedom to go about your life on an easy path, while at the same time having status and a wife to please you. What more can a man want?”

Shallow intakes of air slurred Tristan’s words. “I’m not that man. If that’s the life you deem me fit for—you order me to have—then I’ll give up my knighthood or join my father in the ground before I obey your orders.”

The king laughed again, heartily but disrespectfully. “Do not be ridiculous. I’ve never met a man who would give up his own life to not marry.”

“I’m not most men.”

“So it appears. And what of the man in the blacksmith’s shop? Does he rank as most men? Will you order his death as well, young Tristam? Do you believe him so devoted to you that he’ll give his own life for your stupidity?”

Red hot rage mixed with ice cold fear in Tristan’s veins. “Don’t…you wouldn’t dare. He has nothing to do with this.”

“I believe he does, and have you forgotten who I am. I would most certainly dare if you do not do as I’ve declared, as I have already promised. Your little friend means nothing to me or anyone else. Pull up your hose, boy. Do as you are told, and he will remain as he is and you may do with him what you choose.”

Tristan stood speechless, all the bluster slowly seeping from his body. “I can’t,” he said, his voice raw, throat and eyes burning with unspent emotion. “Please don’t…”

“I believe we’re done here. The wedding is in seven days. Get your affairs in order and prepare to become a wedded man. This is a high honor. Remember it as such. Now leave me.”

There was clearly nothing else Tristan could say, at least not in that moment. His emotions were heightened, itching just under his skin, tugging at his mouth, his eyes, but the last thing he could do was reveal any breaks in his composure in front of his king.

His king.

Those words no longer held the meaning they had upon waking that morning. He suspected they never would again...

Never the Perfect Moment by K-lee Klein

Never the Perfect Moment is a love story about best friends who just happen to work together. Friends to lovers is a trope I really like. I think it's the fact the characters have previous history other than romantic so know each other's little quirks, annoyances, and possible eccentricities already.

It's a different kind of intimacy when a love relationship starts with so much knowledge and can be a very familiar, comfortable transition. But at the same time there is the fear that should the romantic aspect of the relationship fail, something even more important may be lost—the friendship. That apprehension can also be compounded and more confusing when one friend has never been with a man before.

Those fears and concerns are exactly what Bryan has to deal with in Never the Perfect Moment. He loves Chrys as his SWAT partner and the best friend he's ever had. But he feels an even more powerful love, as well, the kind he's pushed to the back of his mind and heart, at least until a near tragedy occurs.

Sometimes almost losing what you hold closest to your heart makes you realize fear is no excuse for not taking a risk in order to get what you really want.
